Spiritual Direction is...

At its core, spiritual direction creates a space for us to slow down and notice how God is working and moving in and around us in our lives. A spiritual director is someone who sits with you in that sacred space helping you to notice, discern and respond to what God is doing.

Spiritual direction is tailored to the individual and the style of the director, but there are some things that most sessions have in common.

How often & where do you meet?

A session is 60 minutes, once a month. Each director has their own preferred meeting location for in person sessions or we also meet with many directees via an online platform (Zoom) which works beautifully in the one on one relationship format.

How do I find a director?

Contact any of our directors to set up your free initial consultation. This 30 minute session helps to determine whether the director is a good fit and clarify any questions you may have. You may decide they are the perfect fit for you, or after prayerful consideration, you may feel like someone else might be better for you. In that case, we are happy to offer referrals.

What do you do there?

Many sessions begin with some time for quiet and prayer, or a planned meditation or prayer practice. Then, you'll move into a time of sharing anything that came up during your quiet time. Some people come with really specific things on their hearts and minds, others let the Holy Spirit lead in the moment.

The director will listen attentively to what you have to say, pay attention to any nudges from God, and ask open-ended questions that help you to uncover what God might be trying to say to you.

What if I don't like my director?

No problem! Sometimes it ends up not being the right fit, and you may not realize that until you've been together for a few sessions. If that's the case, you are free to end the relationship at any time and we are happy to refer you to other directors that may be a better fit.

How many sessions will we meet for?

There is no formal commitment or time period. Sometimes spiritual direction is for a particular season or a few months and some people will continue to meet with directors for years. We do recommend at least three session to really begin to get a feel for one another, but ultimately we encourage you listen for the leading of the Holy Spirit to help you know when you are meant to end a direction relationship.

This is also true for the spiritual director. If at any time, it does not feel like the right fit anymore, a director can also end the direction relationship. They may offer to help you find a new director if that is something you desire.

Can it be more than one person?

The short answer is "yes!" This is what is known as group spiritual direction and it functions a little differently, though still meeting at a regular interval determined by the group.

What is the cost for direction?

Each director sets their own session fee. You can expect that a session will be $60-$100. However, we never want finances to be a reason why someone can't receive spiritual direction. Financial support is worked out individually with your director.

What it is NOT

Spiritual direction is not life coaching, therapy, psychoanalysis, a friendship, an accountability partner, or pastoral care. Though there may be a little overlap in some of these areas, we are not here to offer advice, "fix" things or tell you what to do.

Our role is to help you learn to notice God's presence, to grow closer to Jesus, and to help you to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit. We also commit to holding you before God in prayer on a regular basis.
